Easter Long Weekend 2020 – Travel Restrictions and Double Demerits

Driving offences lawyer Perth

The State Government of Western Australia has recently announced that as of 1 April 2020, Western Australians are not permitted to travel outside their designated region without an exemption.

Western Australian intrastate travel is defined as movement through the boundaries of the regions of Western Australia.

These regions are:

  • Perth and Peel (due to their proximity, the Perth and Peel regions will form one region)
  • South West
  • Great Southern
  • Goldfields-Esperance
  • Mid-West
  • Wheatbelt
  • Gascoyne
  • Pilbara
  • Kimberley

Exemptions apply for:

  • people travelling to work;
  • attending medical appointments;
  • transporting freight;
  • those who do not have access to groceries or supplies within their region;
  • returning to a place of residence;
  • attending school or an educational institution where necessary;
  • caring for family members; and
  • compassionate grounds.

The Western Australian Police have the power to enforce these restrictions and issue fines of up to $50,000.

Additionally, over the Easter Long Weekend, the Western Australian Police will be issuing Double Demerits for the following offences:

  • Drink or drug driving
  • Failing to wear a seatbelt and child restraint
  • Running a red light
  • Illegal use of a mobile phone while driving
  • Speeding
  • Drive a motor vehicle fitted with a device designed to evade detection by a speed camera (14 points during double demerits period)
  • Drive a motor vehicle in a manner to evade detection by a speed camera (14 points during double demerits period)

These restrictions will be in place from Thursday 9 April 2020 to Monday 13 April 2020 inclusive, with the aim of encouraging safe driving on long weekends and public holidays.

Please take care on the roads and stay safe this long weekend. From all of the staff at Kate King Legal, we wish you and your family a safe and happy Easter.
